ALTERNATIVE RESPONSE - IN-PERSON CONFERENCE
The Policing Project at NYU Law, the Center for Innovations in Community Safety at Georgetown Law, and the Alternative Mobile Services Association will be co-hosting a national convening on alternative first response. The Advancing the Field of Alternative Response Convening will be held at New York University from June 3-5, 2025.
The convening will include plenary sessions and smaller break-out sessions serving alternative response practitioners, municipal leaders, researchers, and other stakeholders who want to collaborate on sharing promising new practices to the evolving state of this field. Topics will include workforce development, sustainable funding, narrative change, dispatch practices, community engagement, evaluation, responses to mediation, disability justice, and more.

Doug Walton retired as a sergeant with the Roseburg Police Department in 2025 and immediately went to work for Adapt Integrated Health Care as a crisis case manager and trainer of their mobile crisis team. But Doug's transition from police work to mobile crisis work started long before retirement, and this May 2025 interview shows how mobile team leaders can identify and recruit officers post-retirement to crisis work.
