California’s Gov. Gavin Newsom’s latest budget offers no new investment in the 988 system - including mobile crisis services, despite the continued growth in demand. Advocates now warn federal cuts because of the Trump Administration’s HR 1 Act will increase strain on the public health safety net, resulting in more people experiencing mental and physical health coverage gaps and greater instability in communities.
NEW YORK CITY - After Vowing to Overhaul 911 Response, Mamdani Takes Cautious First Step (New York Times)
Mamdani has signed an executive order to create a Mayoral Office of Community Safety, rather than a full-fledged city agency. He announced Renita Francois, a former city official, will lead the office as deputy mayor for community safety. Her office will start with just one other staff member.
The office will begin with roughly $260 million in funding moved from existing programs, meaning Mamdani has not yet committed to spending any new money on the effort.
